Ghadir Khumm.
Read with context.

Historical context and differing interpretations from the app’s research collection.

From the Twelver Shia perspective, Ghadir Khumm is understood as the Prophet’s designation of Imam Ali (AS) to the Imamate. Other Muslim traditions interpret the declaration differently; the historical report and its theological meaning should be distinguished.

Historical context

The gathering at Ghadir Khumm is placed by Islamic tradition after the Farewell Pilgrimage in 10 AH / 632 CE. Reports describe the Prophet addressing travellers and making a declaration concerning Ali ibn Abi Talib. The event is discussed in Sunni and Shia hadith and historical literature.

A Twelver Shia reading

Twelver Shia theologians understand the declaration involving the word mawla in the setting of the sermon as a designation of Ali's authority after the Prophet. They often read the event alongside Qur'an 5:67 and 5:3, although the connection of these verses to Ghadir is disputed in exegetical traditions.

Other interpretations

Many Sunni scholars accept reports about the declaration while interpreting mawla in terms of loyalty, affection or support, rather than an explicit appointment to political succession. Reports vary in wording and surrounding details.
