15 questions

Do Shia Muslims believe the Imams were prophets?
Imamate

No. Twelver Shia Muslims regard Muhammad as the final prophet. The Twelve Imams are understood as divinely appointed guides who preserve and explain the Prophet's teachings, not as recipients of a new scripture or new prophethood. Sunni Muslims generally understand political and religious authority after the Prophet differently.

Do Twelver Shia Muslims use a different Qur'an?
The Qur'an

No. Mainstream Twelver Shia Muslims recite the same Qur'anic text used by Sunni Muslims. Historical reports about interpretation, compilation and variant readings must not be confused with the contemporary Twelver doctrine that the Qur'an is preserved.

Is asking God through the Prophet or Ahlulbait the same as worshipping them?
Tawassul

Twelver Shia teaching distinguishes worship, which belongs to God alone, from seeking nearness to God through the status of His righteous servants. Other Muslims may dispute particular forms of tawassul; the disagreement should be described accurately rather than reduced to accusations about intentions.

Does taqiyyah mean a general permission to lie?
Taqiyyah

No. In Twelver jurisprudence taqiyyah concerns concealing one's beliefs in particular circumstances of danger or serious harm. Its scope and limits are discussed in legal scholarship; it is not a blanket instruction to deceive others.

Why do Shia Muslims commemorate Karbala?
Ashura

Ashura commemorates the killing of Imam Hussain and members of his family and companions in 680 CE. Twelver Shia remembrance emphasises grief, moral responsibility and resistance to injustice. Practices differ across communities and should not be presented as uniform.

Do Shia Muslims reject every companion of the Prophet?
The Companions

No. Twelver Shia historical assessments distinguish individual companions and their actions. They emphasise loyalty to the Prophet's family while evaluating disputed events after his death. Criticism of particular historical decisions should not be mistaken for rejection of every companion.

Why do many Shia Muslims combine prayers or prostrate on earth?
Prayer

Twelver Shia jurisprudence permits performing noon and afternoon prayers, and sunset and night prayers, in consecutive periods while retaining five obligatory daily prayers. Prostration is performed on natural earth or suitable materials, often a clay tablet; the tablet is not itself worshipped.

Why is Ghadir Khumm important to Twelver Shia Muslims?
Ghadir Khumm

Both Shia and Sunni traditions transmit reports about the Prophet's words concerning Ali at Ghadir Khumm, although wording, context and interpretation are debated. Twelver Shia Muslims understand the declaration of Ali as mawla as an announcement of his divinely appointed leadership. Many Sunni interpreters instead emphasise Ali's merit and the duty to love or support him. The meaning of mawla and the event's relationship to succession should be examined through specific transmitted reports.

Why do Shia accounts discuss the meeting at Saqifa?
Saqifa

After the Prophet's death, a meeting at Saqifa preceded Abu Bakr's accession. Twelver Shia historical theology considers the process important because it contrasts communal political selection with the doctrine of divinely designated Imamate. The participants' motives, sequence of events and later reports require careful source comparison; disagreement about succession does not justify hostility toward contemporary Muslims.

What was the dispute over Fadak?
Fadak

Fadak was an agricultural estate associated with the Prophet. Accounts differ about Lady Fatimah's claim and the grounds on which Abu Bakr declined it, including whether the property had been gifted or inherited and how prophetic inheritance reports were interpreted. In Twelver Shia memory the dispute also concerns the standing and rights of the Prophet's household. The precise wording of attributed speeches and reports should be assessed by source and transmission.

Do Shia Muslims believe the Imams are divine?
Infallibility

No. Twelver Shia theology holds that the Imams are human servants of God who are protected from sin and religious error through divine grace, a doctrine often called ismah. This does not make them gods, prophets or independent sources of divine power. Muslim theologians disagree over the scriptural and rational arguments for the extent of this protection.

Do all Shia Muslims commemorate Ashura in the same way?
Mourning practices

No. Commemoration varies widely across regions and communities, including sermons, poetry, processions, charitable service and mourning gatherings. There are significant legal and ethical disagreements about particular bodily practices. The death of Imam Hussain is central to the remembrance, but no single local custom represents every Twelver Shia Muslim.

What is mut'ah in Twelver jurisprudence?
Marriage and temporary marriage

Twelver Ja'fari jurisprudence recognises a time-limited marriage contract subject to legal conditions and obligations. Sunni legal schools generally hold that this form of marriage was prohibited. Historical narrations about the timing and basis of prohibition are interpreted differently. It is important to distinguish legal doctrine from cultural practice and from any coercive or exploitative conduct.

Is belief in the Mahdi unique to Shia Islam?
The Mahdi

No. Belief in a future Mahdi appears in multiple Islamic traditions. Twelver Shia Muslims specifically identify the Mahdi as Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Askari, the twelfth Imam, and affirm his occultation. Other Muslims may expect a future Mahdi without accepting this identification or the doctrine of occultation.

Do Twelver Shia Muslims believe the twelfth Imam is still alive?
Occultation

Yes. Twelver doctrine holds that Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi entered occultation and will reappear by God's permission. This is a theological belief, not a claim that can be independently established by ordinary historical methods. Other Muslim traditions hold different eschatological views.
